The Functional Safety department deals with designing products safely and avoiding risks from hazards. Our Functional Safety team offers combined knowledge and experiences from different fields for the implementation of functional safety in processes and technology. We apply the standards of the automotive, rail and aviation sectors.
More than ever before product safety relies on electrical and electronic systems and their correct functionality. Malfunctions of these systems may lead to hazardous situations that might put people in danger. Considering the growing number of such critical control devices in current applications Functional Safety will continue to become even more important in the future.
The proper and safe functionality of these systems – even in the event of a failure – must therefore be ensured. Functional safety is a risk-based observation and involves a series of activities. As a complete service provider, etamax supports its customers with the development and verification of their products and processes for optimal acceptance and product protection on international markets.
The field of Railway Technology involves all topics concerning the railway industry. Not just the large railway companies from the region can be noted here (Alstom and Siemens), but rather their suppliers as well (for example, GSP Sprachtechnologie).
We cover many different areas for our customer Alstom: in the system development, we work primarily on control technology, doors, vehicle diagnosis and driver’s platform display, but also on the coupling and passenger information system.
Our diverse team also developed software for control technology, vehicle diagnosis and driver’s platform display. Furthermore, etamax performs different software tests for its customers (module tests, visualization, interface and integration tests in the lab, verification and validation test on the vehicle).
We also provide competent support in the area of development and maintenance for software quality management according to the requirements of the standards DIN EN 50128 and Fpr EN 50657. The focus here is on the supplier software quality. etamax also ensures safety with documentation management: the creation of the documentation structure according to EN 15380 is also in our area of competence. We develop and maintain quality documents for the software development, change and test process (for example, software quality management/assurance plan, change and impact analysis plan and report templates) based on the requirements of DIN EN 50128 and Fpr EN 50657.
Software Competence Center
The Software Competence Center at etamax deals with the holistic software development process. We support our customers throughout the entire lifecycle of a software application in diverse projects. This ranges from activities for requirement engineering to the validation of a product using test management. We ensure a clear specification of requirements using precise moderation within the scope of workshops or create these on behalf of the customers.
Since accurate documentation significantly improves the sustainability and value of software, etamax only uses experienced technical editors for the projects. Comprehensive knowledge about software architecture and modern development paradigms are our main concerns in the design and implementation of customized applications. Based on these foundations we create automated solutions so that our customers can make a qualified statement about the maturity and acceptance of their product.
Even after delivery, we support our customers and end users with the use of their product and combine knowledge and information to further develop the software.
The Embedded Software department at etamax space GmbH focuses on the development of hardware-interfacing software solutions in the avionics, space and automotive domains. Our project range in software development covers the following segments:
- Development of fully autonomous air control software systems
- Support with the development of satellite on-board software
- Development of software solutions for avionic hardware suppliers
These are implemented with modern tools of model-based software development such as SCADE, but also using programming languages such as C or C++.
The development of safety-critical software is paramount to us. Standards such as ECSS, DO-178C and ISO 26262 form the basis of our daily work and reflect our quality demands for product realization. The department also includes the following aspects from the areas of verification and validation to satisfy these standards:
- Development of individual software solutions to validate safety-critical software
- Software tests in simulations, hardware in the loop (HiL) as well as on productive hardware
- Independent tests within the scope of Independent Software Verification and Validation (ISVV)
- Software quality assurance according to the standards mentioned above

Ground Segment Software
The department of Ground Segment Software supports our international customers such as the ESA, the EU and EUMETSAT both in software development and quality assurance. We rely on more than 20 years of experience in the sector.
Located in Darmstadt, etamax takes advantage of the physical proximity to the ESOC as well as EUMETSAT and supports the space organisations both on site with engineering services as well as through the execution of scientific studies. This includes quality assurance for EGSE Systems in general – with a focus on the MCS – as well as the development of data systems for the SSA office and the development of EGSE software.
etamax’s participation in numerous GOF 9 general contracts also allows us to directly support the satellite operations at the ESA with operators. In different studies, we implement current technologies such as machine learning algorithms as well as modern agile processes.
We cover the complete software development process in compliance with relevant standards such as the ECSS-E-ST-40C: from requirements engineering, software design and the implementation to all forms of test automation and project management.
The Space Environment department has existed since the foundation of etamax space GmbH. The core expertise is the development of software tools to simulate and analyse the influence of the space environment on satellites and spacecraft. The SpaceEnv department is an important partner of the European Space Agency ESA, in particular regarding space debris analysis. We develop, license and maintain standard software for the ESA, for example, ESABASE2, which is used to analyse the risk a space mission is exposed to due to space debris.
SpaceEnv participates in the development of a software tool to simulate collisions in space and is developing a model to describe the particle clouds that are created when small pieces of space debris or natural micrometeorites collide on a surface. Our tasks also include the calculation of the risk for the population upon the re-entry of a spacecraft.
Since the simulations always require a geometric model of the spacecraft, we also deal with the conversion of model data into different formats. Our goal is to improve the interoperability between the different disciplines by making it easier to exchange data.
The software development for the customer ESA is always executed according to ECSS standards and requires a corresponding verification and validation of the software, a task that etamax offers and performs also for third party software.
